Women’s “extraterrestrial” achievements noted in the Guinness Book of Records:

  • As you know, the first woman to conquer the vastness of the universe was Valentina Tereshkova. She flew into space on June 16, 1963 and spent 2 days, 22 hours and 50 minutes in orbit, making 48 orbits around the Earth and flying 1,971,000 km!
  • The first woman to go into outer space was also our compatriot Svetlana Savitskaya (who went into space for the first time only 19 years after Tereshkova). This happened on July 25, 1984 at the Soyuz T-12-Sapyut-7 orbital complex.
  • The longest space flight among women was made by American Shannon Lucid. She went into space aboard the American space shuttle Atlantis on March 22, 1996, and returned to Earth on September 26, having spent 188 days and 5 hours in orbit.
  • The record speed for a woman in space is 28582 km/h. This speed was developed on April 29, 1990 at the final stage of the flight by the Discovery shuttle, on board of which Catherine Sullivan was among other astronauts.
  • The maximum height to which a woman has climbed in space is 600 km. This record was set by American Catherine Thornton during a flight on the Endeavour spacecraft in 1993.
